A rose

If you take the time to read this post, let me warn you it is mostly for my own self-reflection. It may not follow any rational line of thought.

The old adage "Stop and smell the roses" has always meant slow down and enjoy the little things in life. For me a new meaning has developed. When I hear "stop and smell the roses" I know I need to appreciate things in life that will always stay the same. A beautiful blooming rose will always smell, well like a rose. It doesn't matter if life is falling apart around you. It doesn't matter if you are sad, happy, angry or hurt; a rose will always smell sweet. Coming to the realization that life does not turn out as planned can be a difficult turning point on the road to self-discovery. How many times I said, "by that time we'll..." and "well our plan is..." only to have that time come and go and the plan dissolve before it even began. How easy it can be to lay down and cry. To ask Why? or Why not? To wonder when it's going to get easier, like everyone else tells you it will. Sometimes it doesn't get easier. Sometimes waiting is the challenge. Sometimes you escape one hardship only to find another. Sometimes life has a different plan, and I've learned that life's plan always trumps your plan. But a rose will always smell the same. And, the sun will always rise in the East. Sometimes the world seems like it's spinning without me. Like I've lost control of the situation; or, everything is pushing in the opposite direction of where I want to go. Sometimes life's plan, the Lord's plan, makes no sense to me. And, I wonder why my dreams seem so out of reach. At these times I found that focusing on the constants in life, even if they are as simple as the smell of rose, enable me to focus on what's important. I am truly blessed. I have loving husband and beautiful, healthy kids. I have never been without a roof over my head. I have never had to walk through the dust and heat to find drinking water. I have never had to pull the blanket tighter around me to stay warm. I have never had to forage or beg or stand in line for a slice of bread. I am so blessed. I have come to appreciate the simple, beautiful things that have been placed on this earth for my enjoyment. I am content. I will appreciate the smell of the rose, the warmth of the sun on my face, and the sound (at least the memory of) of the ocean as it laps upon the shore.

Just Because

I usually don't take pictures when we go to the zoo because we go so often. This time was different for two reasons. One, look at my Pip-squeaks hair! She let me do it today so it had to be documented. And two, the kids were having such a good time I couldn't help but take a couple.
The zoo needs to offer an unlimited ride pass for the carousel! My Pip-squeak would have stayed on for an hour if I had let her! The Little Guy had a list of animals he was going to ride next, and then next after that, and then next after that. Sorry guys, mommy's broke.

I can't tell you how many times I stood in front of this Gorilla cut-out as a kid. My Pip-squeak thought it was the greatest. She tried as hard as she could to be as tall as the gorilla. She obviously has a few more inches to grow. The Little Guy was convinced he was almost there. . . until he saw the picture.

After a "long" 2 1/2 hour trip to the zoo, the kids were pretty tuckered out.

I'm realizing how truly boring this post really is. I need to ramp up the humor, but I've got nothin'. I'll work on that for next time!

"Silly Girl" or Pup In Pot

When ever I hear my Pip-squeak say, "Silly Girl" I know she's done something naughty. Today she came up to me and started laughing. I asked her what was so funny and she said, "Oh, silly girl. Silly, silly girl." Two sillies must mean twice the trouble so I asked her to show me what was so silly. This is where she brought me:

She was smiling and reaching for the soap (I can only assume to give doggy a bath) when I assured my "silly girl" that no one (even doggies) want to take a bath in a potty. Instead we are currently giving him a nice bubble bath . . . in the washing machine.

No Bones About It

We have an every-other-year-party rule at our house. Birthday's rotate between friend parties and family activities. This year was a family activity year, and the Little Guy chose to go to the Dinosaur Museum at Thanksgiving Point. He prepared a fish fossil, which is now being displayed on his bookshelf with about a dozen other "favorite" knick-knacks he keeps close by. The dinosaur museum is really big and he and the Pip-squeak had a lot of fun playing through all the exhibits. I must have read 100 plaques! So a big thanks to the thoughtful palentologists who put phonetic spellings next to the real names enabling me to sound like I knew what I was talking about!
One of their favorite things to do at the Dino Museum is to play in the sand in the Quarry room. It took a lot of persuasion to get the Pip-squeak out. The Little Guy loves the idea of discovery new things. He goes on expeditions around our house and loved uncovering the bones in the sand with his paint brush tool.

Even though we didn't have a "friend party" I thought we should stick with a theme so I attempted to make a dinosaur fossil cake. It's covered with crushed vanilla wafers, and I shaped the bones out of gum paste. Gum paste is edible, but not tasty. I should have used chocolate instead, oh well. The hardest part was writing Happy Birthday. Frosting does not like to stick to crushed vanilla cookies! It took almost as long to write "Happy Birthday" as it did to frost the whole cake. And my handwriting is still awful!

I love that I got a pic in the blowing-out process. It takes a nice, big breath to blow out six candles, but the Little Guy did it in one go. Ironically he didn't even eat the cake. He scraped off the frosting and ate that with his ice cream. I seem to remember doing the same kind of thing when I was little!

He had a pretty pile of presents and cash when the day was through. We brought him to the toy store to spend the birthday cash and he was able to get more Bakugan (the biggest thing since Bionicles at our house), another light saber, and some Star Wars Legos. Thanks to everyone who remember his birthday! He got a phone call from his Uncle Grey, and although he didn't say much of anything on the phone he talked me through the entire conversation afterward, twice. His Aunt Alice sent him a birthday card from Germany where she is currently serving a mission. He loved getting a handful of cards in the mail. And saving the best for last, he got to spend the night with his Grandma Debbie and Papa George, which he had been looking forward to all week!

At the end of the night he told me he had one of his best birthdays ever. My heart fluttered and I thought about that day six years ago when I held him in my arms for the first time. He was so little and helpless and I was completely terrified that I was going to screw him up. I can only attribute his sweet spirit to the angels that are watching over him, because heaven knows I still need some help.

How About That

Over the past six months or so I've collected a small sampling of the random things my little guy says. He makes me laugh every day with the funny, random thoughts that pop into his head, and out of his mouth. These are all his Quotes of the Week I've posted since June of last year:

Little Guy:
"Should I wear underwear with these?" (June 2008)

"But...but, if you clip my finger nails I won't be able to poke myself." (July 2008)

"When I grow up I think I'll be a fireman, or a farmer, because I like the letter F." (Aug. 2008)

"The table tastes good." (Sept. 2008)

Regarding LDS General Conference: "When will this movie be over?" (Oct. 2008)

"It would be cool if a horse jumped over your head" (Oct. 2008)

"Mom, can we go to Disneyland?...Or bowling?" (Nov. 2008)

"Are you telling me November lasts a whole month!?" (Nov. 2008)

-Little Guy: "Christmas is Jesus' birthday, so I want to give him a present"
Mom: "What would you like to give him?"
Little Guy: "Happiness...and a nerf gun."- (Nov. 2008)

"Daddy, I love you more than Christmas" (Dec. 2008)

-Little Guy: "Will I get more sins if I go in the sin water?"
Mom: "What's sin water?"

From the lyrics of a Little Guy original ballad:
"I'll be here to help you when you get old and gray." (Dec. 2008)

"Look, when I want to shoot you you should just say 'OK'!" (Jan. 2009)

"Mom, if Santa already came, why is it still snowing??" (Jan. 2009)

-Mom: "It's Papa's birthday tomorrow. He'll be 51."

"Do spiders have lips?" (March 2009)
